My dad & I are constantly trading links on cool knives and gadgets that could potentially find a spot in our arsenal or fifth pocket. In April he printed out a flyer from Triple Eight Knives and handed it to me with a gleam in his eye.

We have always shared an interest in hooked blades, but never got around to purchasing one because most hook knives are fixed blades and oftentimes bigger than our legal 4 inch restrictions and on the expensive and “when would i ever use this” side of the coin. That all changed when he showed me the COPTOOL from Triple Eight.

At only THREE INCHES when closed and a mere 4.25″ when open and locked, this is not only the perfect fifth pocket companion, it’s insanely sharp. With a belt clip on the one side, I knew just where to put this the minute I ripped it out of the box using my usual penknife.

I now have my folding Cop Tool knife attached to my visor in my truck for storage and on weekends when working around the house it has completely dominated my fifth pocket spot over all of my other knives.

Much of the penknife links found around the internet consider a penknife to be a concealed blade that is secretly hidden inside of an ordinary pen casing. While this might be true for “actual” knives that also contain a pen, most of us grew up considering a penknife to be synonymous with a pocketknife or a folding knife of convenient size.

The cool thing about actual penknives is that the pen isn’t just for show! Most of the affordable penknives are actual pens with actual knives!

ACTUALLY AWESOME!

Some online vendors also stock the refills for the writing half of the penknife in bulk, so you could buy a penknife with a slim blade, and use it at work and no one will know!

With all of a regular pocketknife’s uses, the penknives that contain both a pen and a knife are actually quite handy around the office. Letter opener, fresh bag of potato chips slicer, banana dicer, loose string on your shirt trimmer, dirty fingernail cleaner or a perfect missle for a foam drop ceiling with no pencil holes; your imagination is your only limiting factor.

While they make better tools than self defense products, they are categorized in general as a self defense item, so defend against boredom!

When I was a child, I can remember opening Christmas gifts at my Grandmother’s house and ripping off the paper only to find a taped box or plastic zip tie wrapped around my new toy. The torture involved in opening gifts at that young age was that you could only go so far in playing with a toy before you had to ask for an adult to open the gift the rest of the way for you.

I knew where to go for help.

My Grandpa, my Uncle and my Dad all carried penknives. Every day of every season, from the time I was old enough to remember until now, they always had a tool in their pockets to either pry something open for one of us kids or to make their lives easier.

Penknives, pocket knives, folding knives and switchblades were around everywhere I went from the time of infancy until the time I earned my first penknife. Having been around them my whole life, I have never seen a pocketknife in a negative light or to be used as a weapon.

One of my penknives is always in my right pocket, or fifth pocket if I’m wearing jeans, and it has become a staple of my “must have items” along with my wallet and my bandanna.
