My dad & I are constantly trading links on cool knives and gadgets that could potentially find a spot in our arsenal or fifth pocket. In April he printed out a flyer from Triple Eight Knives and handed it to me with a gleam in his eye.

We have always shared an interest in hooked blades, but never got around to purchasing one because most hook knives are fixed blades and oftentimes bigger than our legal 4 inch restrictions and on the expensive and “when would i ever use this” side of the coin. That all changed when he showed me the COPTOOL from Triple Eight.

At only THREE INCHES when closed and a mere 4.25″ when open and locked, this is not only the perfect fifth pocket companion, it’s insanely sharp. With a belt clip on the one side, I knew just where to put this the minute I ripped it out of the box using my usual penknife.

I now have my folding Cop Tool knife attached to my visor in my truck for storage and on weekends when working around the house it has completely dominated my fifth pocket spot over all of my other knives.

Our president seems to think our tiny, shiny, useful and sometimes ceremonial penknives and pocket knives are a threat to national security.

After every election I wait and see which of my freedoms will be challenged next. I didn’t feel like my privacy was being invaded when I was told my phones were tapped and my library activities were being documented. Both of those seemed like good ideas, and since I don’t often plan bombings on the phone or borrow books on explosives or Jihad, I figured those were accpetable means with which to protect our population from doom.

But my penknife?

My beloved pocket knives?

The one in my fifth pocket, the one in my center console, the one clipped to my visor in my truck and the one in my desk drawer – all threats to national security NOW when I’m not allowed to carry a gun in my state either.

If I can’t open a beer bottle with a gun like Homer Simpson, NOW I can’t pop it open with my knife either!

Mister President, do something else with my tax dollars please, or I’ll carve my frustrations into the nearest Oak tree!

When I was a child, I can remember opening Christmas gifts at my Grandmother’s house and ripping off the paper only to find a taped box or plastic zip tie wrapped around my new toy. The torture involved in opening gifts at that young age was that you could only go so far in playing with a toy before you had to ask for an adult to open the gift the rest of the way for you.

I knew where to go for help.

My Grandpa, my Uncle and my Dad all carried penknives. Every day of every season, from the time I was old enough to remember until now, they always had a tool in their pockets to either pry something open for one of us kids or to make their lives easier.

Penknives, pocket knives, folding knives and switchblades were around everywhere I went from the time of infancy until the time I earned my first penknife. Having been around them my whole life, I have never seen a pocketknife in a negative light or to be used as a weapon.

One of my penknives is always in my right pocket, or fifth pocket if I’m wearing jeans, and it has become a staple of my “must have items” along with my wallet and my bandanna.
